Rules to Post: Evangelical Forum

In my continuing quest to reach the 1000 mark on my Religious Labels survey, I find myself in some strange places. The following list of rules is taken directly from the “Evangelical Discussion Forum” at CARM.org. Now I am not criticizing a group’s right to set rules and to be exclusive and all that — that’s their right… but damn, these are still some craaaaaazy rules! #13 says it all, you must believe in your heart that homosexuality is akin to pedophilia to post here… wow…

In order to qualify for being able to post on the Evangelical Board, you must agree to the following statement of faith.
  1. The Scriptures, both Old and New Testaments, to be the inspired Word of God, without error in the original writings, the complete revelation of His will for the salvation of men and the Divine and final authority for Christian faith and life.
  2. That there is but one true God in all existence, in all places, and in all time, who is the Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons. God is a Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
  3. That Jesus Christ is presently true God and true man, having been conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He died on the cross, a sacrifice for our sins according to the Scriptures. Further, He arose bodily from the dead, ascended into heaven, where, at the right hand of the Majesty on High, He is now our High Priest and Advocate.
  4. That Jesus will return bodily to this world to fulfill His ministry and calling as God and Lord.
  5. That the Holy Spirit, like the Father and the Son, has a will, can grieve, love, hate, and is worthy of all worship and honor.
  6. That the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ and to convict men, regenerate the sinner, indwell, guide, instruct and empower the believer for godly living and service.
  7. That man was created in the image of God but fell into sin and is, therefore, lost, and only through regeneration by the Holy Spirit can salvation and spiritual life be obtained.
  8. That the shed blood of Jesus Christ and His resurrection provide the only grounds for justification and salvation for all people. This justification and salvation is obtained by grace through faith alone for all who believe, and only such as receive Jesus Christ, by faith, are born of the Holy Spirit and, thus become children of God.
  9. That water baptism and the Lord’s Supper are ordinances to be observed by the Church during the present age. They are, however, not to be regarded as means of salvation or necessary for salvation.
  10. That the true Church is composed of all such persons who through saving faith in Jesus Christ have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit and are united together in the Body of Christ of which He is the Head.
  11. In the bodily resurrection of the dead; of the believer to everlasting blessedness and joy with the Lord; of the unbeliever to judgment and everlasting conscious punishment which will not end.
  12. That the Lord and God possess an exhaustive foreknowledge of all things potential as well as actual and that there is nothing God does not know.
  13. You agree that sexual immorality, homosexuality is a sin as is pedophilia and beastiality.

  1. i like how #5 explains that the Holy Spirit has a will and can express all emotions including love and hate, and this is what makes it worthy of worship and honor. i picture the 3 headed ‘knights who say Nee’….”let’s be nice to him.”, “no, let’s kill him.”, “i’m hungry…”

  2. Why have a forum when there is nothing to discuss. It seems to me this is just a comfort place for people to lazy to think criticaly and/or are indoctrinated.

  3. I wonder how many people have passed and are allowed to post. So #7 has me wondering, if Adam and Eve were born without sin and walked around, shot the breeze, chilled in the Garden, and then ate the fucking apple. How come if I’m just chilling and shooting the breeze, not killing anyone and minding my own business…how come I have to be a sinner? I didn’t eat the fucking apple and I sure as hell didn’t have a conversation with a serpent.

  4. To Megan: oh, that’s easy. it’s called original sin. you know, the sins of the father are visited … yadayadayada. no way to escape it … or be forgiven for it … except thru baptism. It’s one of the neat little features of just Christianity. Interesting logical contortions one has to go thru to cover all bases, isn’t it?

  5. Original sin is not an original Christian doctrine. It was developed centuries after Christ, and really would not be what it is today – Adam and Eve ate the apple, so God punishes you for their sin – until over 1000 years after Christ. In that, the doctrine only developed in the West, beginning in Roman Catholic Christianity, then trickling down to Protestantism (though Protestants hold a variety of views on the subject).

Sadly, it leads to a false Christian view that God is some bully sending all the “sinners” to hell.

This guilt-based angry God notion was not part of original Christianity.

About this “Statement of Faith” – that is not my faith, so I guess I won’t be posting on their board.

  6. just because the concept of original sin wasn’t ‘originally’ (haha get it…) part of Christian beliefs, that doesn’t mean it’s free from blame as belonging to Christianity. i love how newer religions market to prospective converts by ‘improving’ on faults of older religions, like the Mormons assigning the age of 8 as the cut-off point of innocence. according to them, there is an 8 year grace period to be free of sin. and, my favorite, are the Jehovah Witnesses, who literaly are taught the characters in their holy book lived to hundreds of years of age (like Yoda), i suspect to combat the number of ancestors vs. the time frame of the saga not matching up logically. so, just make their life span astronimical, genius!

  7. The concept of original sin is first seen in the writings of St. Augustine in the 5th century, though not as it is seen today. It would be developed as it is now in the treatise “Why the God Man” sometime around the 11th century (I forget the precise date).

Original sin, while developed in Western Christianity and being a Western Christian doctrine, was not part of the Christian Faith, universally, in the first 500-1000 years, nor is it part of churches that never became Roman Catholic or Protestant.

For the record, I am neither speaking from a Mormon or JW perspective. I attend an Eastern Orthodox Church. Orthodoxy is the oldest Christian religion, not a new one “trying to improve on the older.” (the Church in Jerusalem was founded before the Church in Rome🙂 ) Anyways, I just wanted to say that all of the angry God guilt based ideas that are so often seen in Western Christianity are not representative of the whole, nor of the early ancient faith.

For a better explanation on this, google the short paper “River of Fire” by Alexandre Kalomiros. He deals with this subject very well, as well as giving an introduction into the Eastern Church’s perspective of this doctrine and how it was understood in Judaism and the early church.

  8. very nice site🙂

  9. I’m the only one in this world. Can please someone join me in this life? Or maybe death…

  10. Moral dilemna!

Wazzup! Bored in class here, decided to introduce myself.

OK actually I had something on my mind. This is what transpired: After classes I took the bus, I was starving so I stopped in at this restaurant and picked this sandwitch from the menu and then went off to eat it in a corner after finishing it I realized I had not paid for it!

Yeah evidently they were super busy and distracted because there was this manager/investor type looking around everywhere and talking to them. So I was just about to go up to the counter and say I hadn’t paid but then I realized if I did that the owner guy might get mad at the employees. So I just left. What should I have done do you think?

  11. God does not exist.
Christ died for his sins, not for mine.
Life is short, so let’s fornicate, let’s mingle, let’s have sex with women, men, whatever you like, and in any physically possible way.
Don’t believe in religions: those are simply means to control people and to keep them in the darkness of ignorance.

    GOD IS A FAKE !!!!!
